What kind of brewery is it?
The brewery was founded in 1540 (Tenbun 9) in Kawanakajima, when it is said to have started as a farmers' sake shop that shared surplus tax rice as sake. In the mid-Edo period it built a brewhouse for full-scale brewing, and a former brewhouse from around 1765 used twelve large wooden tubs. The company was set up as a limited company in 1963 under its earlier name, a new brewhouse was completed in 1997, a woman toji took office in 2000, and in 2007 the business was renamed Shusen Kurano Inc.
What makes it distinct

- Brewing water comes from a well inside the brewery, drawn from groundwater of the Chikuma and Sai rivers.
- Ingredients
- Uses the sake rice Miyamanishiki, grown under contract with local farmers.

- A woman toji has led brewing since 2000.
