Okuda Shuzoten (有限会社奥田酒造店)

Okuda Shuzoten is a small sake brewery in Kyowa, Daisen City, Akita, making the Chiyomidori brand. Founded in the Enpo era, it has been led by successive heads who take the name Juemon, now in the 18th generation.

What kind of brewery is Okuda Shuzoten?

The brewery was founded in the Enpo era on a site judged ideal for sake brewing, and its heads have taken the name Juemon for 18 generations. The brand name Chiyomidori is said to come from a verse the first owner composed on seeing the green mountains in early summer. Houses were lost to fire in the Boshin War, so the present brewery dates from the Taisho era, a traditional white-walled wooden building on a stone foundation. The well in use since the founding still supplies all brewing water, drawn from Ou mountain subterranean flow.
