History
Its predecessor was Kato Shuzoten, started in the late Edo period (Ansei era) by a toji from Niigata who came to Mito. The business was taken over in 1950 and became the present Meiri Shurui. In 1977 the company developed and registered the Kyokai No. 10 yeast used in sake brewing. In 1998 it opened Besshunkan, a museum of plum wine and sake, as a visitor spot in Mito. Today it makes sake, plum wine, shochu, liqueurs and fermented seasonings, and it restarted whisky production in 2022 after about sixty years.
