What kind of brewery is Iwanoi Shuzo?
The company was launched as a joint-stock company in the Taisho era by local people of the Hanaizumi area, who aimed to curb widespread illicit home brewing by exchanging rice for sake. During wartime consolidation it merged with other brewers, paused brewing and continued as a sake retailer, then regained a license to brew independently after the war. More recently it has produced the Junmai Daiginjo Magokoro Purple Label, the Hyakuban series made with local rice and water, and Karui Iwanoi, a low-alcohol genshu made with Miyama Nishiki.
