What kind of distillery is it?

The brewery was founded in 1837 in what is now the Nakatsu area of the Ogura domain. Its founder, Kumatarou Hayashi, was adopted into the family as husband of the daughter of Heisaku, a merchant who ran brewing, soy sauce and wax businesses. Kumatarou narrowed the family trade to sake brewing. In 1935 the brand was renamed from Wakakusa to Kyushugiku, a name chosen by the third-generation Kurou Hayashi, who loved chrysanthemums. Through the postwar years, when many brewers in the Keichiku area closed, the brewery kept the Kyushugiku name established locally. A chimney marked with the brand name, once used when coal mining was at its height, still stands as the brewery's symbol.
