The brewery began in 1893 as Yoshida Kumataro Shoten, founded by the first kuramoto, who also served as the first mayor of Shinjo town. It later became Umenoyado Shuzo Co., Ltd., grew its own brand Tenkaichi and began full-scale ginjo brewing. It introduced year-round employment for brewery workers and hired a British brewer. It expanded into umeshu and other liqueurs, and moved from the toji system to a team-based brewing structure. The fifth-generation head is the current president.
