The official site traces the brewery to 1603, when the Takemura family began brewing in Sakawa under the trade name Kuroganeya. It descends from Edo-period sake merchants, and records show ties with the Saitaniya house connected to Sakamoto Ryoma's family. In 1918 four Sakawa breweries merged as Sakawa Jozo, and in 1919 the local notable Tanaka Mitsuaki proposed the name Tsukasabotan. The brewery pioneered soft-water brewing and also makes honkaku shochu and liqueurs. It runs the antenna shop Gallery Hotei, and tours are on weekdays by reservation only.
