Tsujun Shuzo (通潤酒造)
Tsujun Shuzo is a sake brewery in Kumamoto Prefecture, known for its Tsujun brand. It started as a sake brewery in the mid-Edo period and brews with local water and rice. It was founded in 1770. KIKI lists one of its bottles.
What kind of brewery is Tsujun Shuzo?
The brewery traces its start to the mid-Edo period, when a family running a shipping business began brewing sake to help a village struggling under heavy land taxes. A storehouse still in use was built in 1792. The Tsujun name comes from the nearby aqueduct bridge, linked to a marriage into the family of the 9th head of the brewery. After the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake damaged more than ten storehouses and lost a large amount of sake, the brewery restored the old storehouse over about three years and reopened it in spring 2019 as a place where visitors can enjoy sake.
