Founded in 1901 by the first generation, Sadanobu Matsunaga, as a liquor maker. In 1954 the third-generation head, Sadao Matsunaga, set up the company, and in 2010 it took the name Tensei Shuzo. The koji rice is grown by selected farms, and all brewing and dilution water comes from the local groundwater. The distillation method called hayatare, which leaves out the first and last cuts, was developed in-house. A whisky production license was added in 2022.
