The brewery was founded in 1863 in Ogawa, Saitama, and in 1900 moved to its present site in Fukaya, on the Nakasendo road, seeking good water and location. A brick chimney over 20 meters tall was built in 1930 and became its symbol. The company was incorporated in 1959. In 2007 the sixth-generation head, Hideyuki Takizawa, took over from the previous Nanbu toji master and became toji himself. In 2016 it released a clear sparkling sake made with secondary fermentation in the bottle.
