What kind of brewery is it?

The brewery was founded in 1884 (Meiji 17) by Kumatarō Takagi's family as a sake business. The second generation acquired the Toyonoume name, and in Shōwa 14 (1939) the company was renamed Toyonoume Shuzo before becoming Takagi Shuzo. In 1993 a veteran toji joined the brewery, and from 1995 the fifth-generation head began brewing with him. The fifth generation became toji in 2007, and the sixth generation has held the toji role since 2019. In 2026 the Toyonoume brand was refreshed under the concept of a fragrant sake that carries the festival spirit of Tosa.
