What kind of distillery is it?

History

The distillery was founded in 1869 by Kawada Wasuke as the Kawada sake shop. Its sweet potato shochu became popular as Wasuke shochu, and in the early Taisho era the brand was renamed Shirakane no Tsuyu. A story is told that Saigo Takamori visited the distillery. In 1986 traditional hand-crafted production was revived inside the original stone warehouse, which became a nationally registered tangible cultural property in 2001. Today the company runs its main site, a factory at Shigetomi and the Stone Warehouse Museum.
