The brewery began in 1877 as Mochida Eitaro Shoten, started by Eitaro, the third generation of the Mochida family. It became a joint-stock company in 1936, and the fifth-generation Seizo built a tall red-brick chimney in 1951. In the 1980s the sixth-generation Masaomi focused on premium designated sake, developing daiginjo and low-alcohol junmai ginjo with Izumo toji. Five buildings, including the main house, brewhouse and inspection hall, were designated national registered cultural properties in 2017.
