History
The brewery was founded in 1873. Around 2000 the owner Iwao Niizawa became Miyagi's youngest toji at the time and shifted the brewery from mainly regular sake to mostly junmai. Hakurakusei was launched in 2002 with the concept of the ultimate food sake, its name drawn from a local legend of a prized horse in Sanbongi. After the 2011 earthquake damaged the brewery, production moved in November that year to Kawasaki Town near the Zao range, and the head office was rebuilt in August 2013.
