Founded in 1871 under the trade name Hiroshimaya in Takehara, on the Seto Inland Sea. The name Seikyo, meaning sincere mirror, reflects the hope that brewers' sincerity shows in the sake. The fourth head, Kiyoma, began yeast research in the early Showa era and developed an apple yeast in 1940 and the high-temperature saccharification starter in 1947. Maboroshi, made with the apple yeast, was released in 1974. Most output is ginjo and junmai, and it also makes shochu and fruit wine.
