Mishima Shochu Mukunokura (三島村(みしま焼酎 無垢の蔵))
Mishima Shochu Mukunokura is a publicly owned and operated sweet potato shochu distillery on Kuroshima in Mishima Village, Kagoshima. It makes the Mishimamura and Mendon shochus from locally grown sweet potatoes and island water.
What kind of distillery is Mishima Shochu Mukunokura?
The project began with a village mayor's wish to make shochu within the village. Licensing rules at first prevented local production, so sweet potatoes were sent to Hamada Shuzo for contract distilling. Mendon, made from Iojima sweet potatoes, joined in 2017. After the village gained a special shochu zone approval, a distillery was built on Kuroshima in 2018 and began operating in October, and the first locally made shochu went on sale in May 2019. Villagers, town hall staff and newcomers work there with technical support from Hamada Shuzo.
