Matsuse Shuzo was founded in 1860 and was set up as a company on 1 October 1963. It continues to brew in the Yuge area of Ryuo, Shiga. Contract cultivation of sake rice in Ryuo began in 1988, moving from pesticide-free and chemical-free Yamada Nishiki cultivation toward organic cultivation of Yuge-grown Yamada Nishiki. The toji is Keizo Ishida.
