History
Godo Shusei began in 1924 when four Hokkaido distilling companies merged in Asahikawa; its roots go back to Kamiya Denbei, who began Japan's first privately run alcohol production in 1900. The present company was incorporated in 2003, is headquartered in Sumida, Tokyo, and has plants in Asahikawa and Tomakomai in Hokkaido, Chiba, Shizuoka and Aomori. The Asahikawa sake brewery Taisetsu no Kura started operating in 1998, using automated equipment for steady quality while koji making and other key steps rely on skilled hands. Since 2010 all its rice is from Hokkaido, grown with a farmers' group in the Nagayama area of Asahikawa (Ginpu and Suisei).
