What kind of brewery is Eigashima Shuzo?
Sake making began in the western Akashi area known as Nishinada in the early Edo period, in the days of the old local Urabe family. In the Meiji era Urabe Hyokichi went independent, and in 1888 he founded Eigashima Shuzo as a company. Its trademark was Yamatodamashii, and Hyakuri Masamune and Kamitaka were registered later. In 1899 it began selling Yamatodamashii in 1.8-litre bottles made at its own bottle plant. In the Taisho era it built a distillery and added shochu, mirin and whisky, and in the Showa era a winery and a whisky distillery beside the head office. Seven wooden kura stand on the site and are all still in use.
