History

The distillery is recorded as founded in 1899 (Meiji 32). Its name combines 万 from the Manse River in Kaseda and 世 from Kaseda, expressing a hope for lasting prosperity. It uses sweet potatoes grown in Minamisatsuma's warm climate and follows the craft handed down by the Kurose toji. In 2006 it fully opened Shomeikan, a factory with an exhibition space near Fukiage Beach. Its flagship Satsuma Bansei uses white koji, and black and yellow koji shochu are also made.
