The company's own history dates its start to 1936, when it was formed as Satsuma Godo Seishu, and it took its present name in 1949. It added the Hinokami Distillery in 1975 and the Eei Distillery in 1980, and in 1992 opened the Meiji-gura cultural museum on the site of its former main plant. All three distilleries stand close to sweet potato fields so that fresh potatoes can be used. A whisky licence followed in 2022, and a visitor centre opened at Hinokami in January 2026.
