The company was created in 1966 at the request of prefectural and city bodies who wanted Kagoshima shochu promoted nationwide, with support from members of the prefectural brewers' cooperative. The name Musou was chosen through a public call among residents. It became a corporation in 1970 and opened a Tokyo office the next year. It uses sweet potatoes such as Kogane Sengan, Shirotoyo, Beni Satsuma and Annou, brews with Nanakubo spring water, and matures spirit in clay pots, wooden barrels and stainless tanks. The head office is in Nanatsushima, Kagoshima, and it formed a business tie-up with Sanwa Shuzo in 2004.
