Kokuto (brown sugar) shochu is a type of shochu that is only permitted to be produced in the Amami Islands of Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan.

"Mankoi," the most historic and popular among them, means "beckoning" in the Amami dialect, signifying "welcoming guests" or "inviting many people."

It features a rising aroma, a gentle mouthfeel, and a robust umami within its sweetness, resulting in a well-balanced finish.

While it is recommended on the rocks or with water, "Mankoi" makes a particularly delightful lemon sour, renowned as "Japan's best lemon sour" on television and other media.
